Snow and ice climbing in Angus

ice-climbing

Snow and ice climbing is slightly different from rock climbing, as a mixture of crampons and ices axes are used to ascend a climb.

It is a demanding and exhilarating sport which uses a variety of climbing techniques and can be taught by a number of the Outdoor Angus activity providers.

Snow and ice climbing in Glen Clova

Glen Clova is the best place for winter climbing in the Angus Glens.

Both the Winter Corrie on Driesh and Corrie Fee on the flanks of Mayar have fine snow and a selection of ice routes to choose from. They are easily accessible, with each area about an hour's walk in from the car park (£2 charge) at the road end. This area is also a popular spot for winter hillwalking.

The climbs are mainly in the lower grades, although there is also a handful of challenging grade four ascents.

Classic routes include "Back Door Chimney" in Winter Corrie and "Look C" in Corrie Fee - both fine mountaineering routes, with the challenge of steep ice while in Corrie Fee.

The alternative snow and ice climbing route known as "B Gully Chimney" is rated grade three and takes a meandering line through steep buttresses.
