The Queens Well, Glen Esk

Located in Glen Mark at the upper end of Glen Esk, the Queen's Well is a stone monument that was built in 1861 to commemorate a visit to the spot by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Queens WellIt is said that the Queen and her husband stopped at this location for a drink while they were staying overnight at the Invermark Lodge, before continuing their journey (probably by the scenic route of Cairn o' Mount) to Balmoral Castle in Royal Deeside.

The countryside around the Queen's Well is famous for its Jacobite history, as Bonnie Prince Charlie (while hiding from the Hanoverian soldiers following the Battle of Culloden) famously hid in a cave near the waterfall at nearby Ladder Burn.

Built over a natural spring, the Queen's Well is a popular resting spot for people who go on Walk Number 16 in the annual Angus Glens Walking Festival.
