Lunan Bay is a large inlet of the North Sea on the coast of Angus (NE Scotland), located south of Montrose between Boddin Point and Lang Craig.
The beach at Lunan Bay consists of large sand dunes and reeds - as such, it is the perfect place for a family picnic. With regards to water activities, Lunan Bay is a very popular location for surfers, windsurfers, kiters and kayakers. The Bay is also a favourite location for anglers, with the nets on the beach illustrating the traditional form of fishing that still takes place there.
Back on terra firma, the beach is also a preferred location for horse-riders, who enjoy the wide expanses of flat sand that the Bay offers equestrians.
The Bay is also an idea place for spotting wildlife - in particular, nesting puffins.
As suggested by the ruins of Red Castle which overlooks Lunan Bay, the area is steeped in history. Robert the Bruce and William the Lionheart both used the castle, before it was gifted (by Bruce) to the Earl of Ross in 1328. The Castle suffered three attacks by the Covenanters in the late sixteenth century, and is now in a serious state of disrepair - and some care needs to be taken if exploring this ruined castle.
With a car park recently added to the area close to the beach, Lunan Bay is now more easily accessible than it was previously.
